One particularly rough day at work, I decided to get out of the office for lunch. Luckily for me, Nordstrom Rack is in the same shopping area as Chik-Fil-A. It’s a win/win no matter how you look at it.
I love “The Rack” so much and thanks to my girl, Lisa, I now know that the new stuff is in on Tuesdays, so Tuesday or Wednesday is the best day to hit it up. I have a usual pattern I follow once I’m in the store: purses/bags, designer jeans/sweaters, shoes, toddler clothing, toddler shoes, done.
Upon first glance, I could tell there were a *TON* more shoes than usual so I bee-lined for the designer racks. I wear a size 10, so I have a little better luck than someone who wears say, a size 7 or 8. I quickly scanned the racks and immediately, I saw these Tory Burch Milan suede wedge booties:
Y’all, I was DYING! I slipped them on and the suede was soft as butter. They fit perfectly and I instantly fell in love.
Then, I looked at the price tag. Originally = $395, Rack price = $249.
I paced. I scanned the racks for a similar bootie that was possibly UNDER $249. Heck, let’s shoot for under $100. Nothing. AHH!
I quickly texted Lauren: “911, talk me out of buying these boots!!”. No response. She does have a job, after all.
There was a lady shopping a few feet away in her Lululemon gear. Let’s be clear, it did not appear that she had been working out, but maybe she thought of shopping as a sport and felt inclined to dress the part. I can respect that.
I turned toward this complete stranger and said, “Excuse me? Yes, um, I am in love with these booties right here on my feet and I need you to talk me out of buying them. My girlfriend is not responding via text and frankly, I need an immediate intervention.”
“Oh my GAWD those are CUUUUUUUTE! You should totally get them!”.
Great. That was no help! I was doomed. These booties already had a fan club. I couldn’t even depend on a complete stranger to talk me out of them. Maybe it was because this store is in Brentwood, a fancier suburb. I dunno. Do you think if The Rack was in a decidedly less fancy suburb I would have had a similar response? I’m thinking no.
I piled the booties in my cart on top of the 2 sweaters, a jacket, Cole Haan black wedge heels and some CUUUUUUUUTTE Joe’s skinny jeans with ripped knees. Yes, I was paying for rips in my jeans.
I checked out and tried not to vomit out my nose. ~$650 later, I went back to work.
Those booties haunted me the rest of the day. When I got home from work, I told Josh that I’d done some shopping and was feeling a little guilty about it. He may have choked when I told him how much the booties were and then he said, “Let’s have a look. Show me what you got!”. This is only one of the reasons I love my husband. No judgment, he just wanted to see what I loved so much that I spent $650 on.
I started with the jeans, booties & a super comfy black knit jacket. Here are the booties on:
Ahhhmazing, right? Josh loved them. The rest of my purchases were keepers too.
I put the booties in my closet and admired them among all my other shoes & boots. They certainly looked fresh and new and CLEAN. Oh, I would have to treat the suede before wearing them. Oh, and it’s supposed to rain the next 3 days so don’t plan on wearing them. Oh, look, there’s hardly any sole on them so if you step anywhere NEAR water, it’s going to seep up the side.
Now I was really second guessing myself. I decided to not treat them and let them sit in my closet until the rain subsided and if I REALLY wanted them, I’d waterproof them and carry on. If after a few days I wasn’t just as happy with them as when I put them in my cart, I’d return them.
The next day, I wondered if possibly I could find some booties similar to the Tory Burch ones for under $100. I searched online and found a few pair that fit the bill: Kenneth Cole Reaction “Tell Lilly Pad” in cocoa suede
They fit perfectly and are beautiful! They have a little more of a sole that will protect the suede, which I am happy about. I scored them for around $85 and decided they would fit the bill.
Granted, the Kenneth Cole boots are dark brown versus the elephant gray Tory Burch boots. After some deep thought, I decided I will wear the brown more and based on the price point, I won’t lay down and die if I get something on these or I’m caught in the rain wearing them. Last but not least, I am definitely not a ‘labels’ person and I just didn’t want to spend the extra money on boots because of a label. No offense, Tory, but if the gray boots had not been Tory Burch, label gone, and they were $150, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. I just didn’t want to pay an extra $100 for “T”.
So, after all of that *analyzing* (FYI: I am an analyst in real life!), I returned the boots to The Rack.
I won’t lie, I looked for those boots during my next trip to The Rack and they were gone.
I had no doubt they would be. Oh my GAWD they were SOOOOO CUUUUUUUUUUTTTEEE!
- Have you ever bought something, paid way too much, and analyzed it to death after the fact???
- Did you keep it??
