A couple of years ago, we moved into new offices in a brand new building. With this brand new building came brand new construction and an even more irritating issue- a mouse. This mouse would get into our desks, shred paper, eat our snacks and leave little tiny droppings behind. Not unlike a toddler I know.
In an effort to find a natural repellent, I read an article that suggested peppermint oil could be my solution. Apparently mice HATE peppermint. Well, since I happen to hate mice and love peppermint, this seemed like a winner! I picked up a bottle of peppermint essential oil at Whole Foods and then placed peppermint oil soaked cotton balls in random desk drawers. Coworkers remarked it felt as if we were in a spa. If only! One can dream of being at the spa at 2pm on a Tuesday, I suppose. The rest of us will grind it out in a mice infested beautifully constructed, modern, open air work ‘space’.
The result? We never saw evidence of that mouse again. Although I did hear he was wreaking havoc on the other side of the building. I can’t be held responsible for that. My snacks were safe and that was my main concern.
Realizing how awesome this discovery was, I wanted to know more about peppermint and what it was capable of.
After consulting Mr. Google (most likely not on company time), my favorite new discoveries were finding out that peppermint 1) can help keep you alert and attentive and 2) it can stave off hunger. What? Yes!

After my research, I took it one step further. I needed to integrate peppermint into my work life and my mint flavored Chapstick was not cutting it. Working with numbers requires some amount of concentration and honestly, after lunch, it is so hard to get back on track. The solution? I grabbed one of these small essential oil diffusers for my office.
It totally does the trick AND smells amazing. Everyday, after lunch, I load it up with peppermint oil to help me get mentally back on track and focused. AND the scent keeps me from afternoon snacking. WIN, WIN! There are blends that are for clarity, relaxation, cleansing- all of these I need on various days depending on my associated stress level which is directly in proportion to amount of nonsense I’m putting up with.
This one would be good for a larger room or if you’re looking for something to fit into your decor while being a little less obvious (it’s also the version that Whole Foods/Whole Body sells):
In your car a lot? Need some SERENITY NOW while waiting in traffic or the pickup line at school? BINGO:
While I know that essential oil use is gaining popularity, specifically through DoTerra and Young Living, Whole Foods has carried essential oils for years and I have found them to be very effective. Lately, I’ve been buying our oils via Amazon- the brand is Eden’s Garden – and I’m very happy with them. They are pure and therapeutic grade, not to mention they are really affordable ($5- $10 a bottle) in comparison to some of the more heavily marketed brands.
My go-to favorites!
The popular oils set (great value when you want to try several):
And my personal favorite, the Synergy Blends (Stay Alert is AWESOME, Hope is necessary on particularly ridiculous days). This is my favorite gift to give right now:
For my husband’s birthday, one of the gifts I gave him was an office diffuser and the Synergy blends set. He uses it constantly and loves the ability to switch between intense focus and relaxation. We also purchased a diffuser and set of oils for my 14 year old daughter, La. She keeps it in her room and rotates the scents based on whether she is studying (Focus, Stay Alert) or trying to sleep (Lavender, Relaxation, Stress Relief).
Love on yourself a bit, love on your friend/mom/daughter/sister and check these out- best purchase our household has made in 2015!
