As long as my oldest daughter La can remember, Valentine’s Day has been a BIG deal at our house. I know it’s a ‘commercialized’ holiday and we should be celebrating love year round. I get it! We do! But on this one special day where I can go overboard, I do. La is an amazing kid and I want to celebrate how much I love her. She loves waking up and coming downstairs to see what each new year brings. It is almost as exciting as a birthday or Christmas morning! From the decorations to specially selected food, there is always something new.
Here are some things I’ve done in the past. Of course these are totally adaptable for your husband/boyfriend/best friend!
Decorate their room door, bathroom or breakfast eating area with balloons, crepe paper and cute hanging signs.
For breakfast, I make heart shaped pancakes using a cookie cutter. Super cute and super easy.
Strawberries continue the red theme and are really special with whipped cream. Shoot, throw the strawberries and whipped cream ON the heart shaped pancakes.
Pack a Valentine lunch. Go with a red or pink theme with lots of hearts. Go ahead and cheese it up…it’s ONE day! How awesome would it be to bring a specially packed lunch to a friend at work?
Cut a sandwich with a heart cookie cutter. Cut cheese slices with a smaller heart cookie cutter. Pack a special drink, my La loves a pink Vitamin water. I also include a cute cup. I ordered these for my girls (and a few extra to sip out of during the day!)
Include a somewhat ‘fancy’ dessert. Last year was chocolate covered strawberries. I packaged them in mini cupcake liners in a clear plastic container with a pretty ribbon.
Of course, this year, I’m going to have to get really creative with the food since we are in the middle of the Whole30 challenge.
Simple Food + Fancy Packaging = WIN.
Include a paper heart napkin and a pink or red plastic knife & fork. Use a Valentine gift bag to package it all, use fancy paper shreds and tie it with curling ribbon. I make sure it’s completely closed with tape so when lunchtime rolls around, it’s like opening a present!
Make something fun for to share with friends. Yours and theirs! I like to make brownies, they’re easy enough and I have the world’s best recipe! (Maybe I will share that in the future). Prepackaged treats are easy to gift if you’re pressed for time. The key is to be sure to include a hand written note “You ROCK” or “Thanks for being awesome!”, whichever suits your fancy.
Write a love note on the bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker. Leave a paper valentine cup next to their toothbrush. On that note, make a one time use toothbrush (Dollar Store!) whose handle has been painted with red glitter. Leave a valentine hand towel on the counter.
Glitter and Glue!
Make a Valentine’s day card from your heart. Use glitter and glue and doilies. Extra cheese = extra points! Put into words what your special person means to you. I promise you, these will be treasured. Cleaning out my daughter’s room a few years ago, I found every single handmade card I have given her. I found zero store bought cards.
This goes for Grandma too. Make her something fun and from the heart. She loves the glitter!
From me to you, Happy Valentine’s Day! xoxo
